Persuasive Writing and NAPLAN.

Students are being given practice in writing persuasive texts. 

These texts expect them to state and then argue a particular point of view.

The structure they are being given to follow is very specific. 

It can be difficult to write a clear introductory paragraph. We are therefore undertaking a number of activities to develop this skill.

If parents would like to help their child develop this skill they can do so by asking them to simply:

1. State their position in a simple sentence.
2. Give three follow up reasons for holding that position.

For example if you ask "Should children brush their teeth?"

They might answer:Children should not brush their teeth. Yellow teeth look great. Bad breath can come in handy and they can save money on toothbrushes and tooth paste.

Things you can ask them to state a position on in related to going camping?

1. What is better? Camping in tents or staying in dorms.
2. Are Aquatic camps something every student should go on?
3. Does going on camps helps students develop life skills?
4. Is attempting aquatic activities without training dangerous?
5. Safety skills are essential for aquatic activities.
6. Is learning to ski / kayak / sail / drive a boat / good for your health.
7. Do tents need to be better designed?
8. Is going on camp scary for some people?.
9. Do camps help you learn new things?
10. Is life without electricity / electronic devices is difficult / better?
11. Is being caught in a storm an interesting learning experience?
12. Do camps provide opportunities for new experiences?
13. Are volunteers important to have on camps?
14. Must teachers know lots of game and activities?
15. Do outside activities beat indoor ones?.
16. Is camping with friends better than with your family?
17. Should school camps be longer than a couple of days?

Learning to make films supports students to become better writers as they have to focus on developing narrative structures.

Mathsonline log in codes provided to all students.

On Friday your child received a log in code for the Mathsonline website and was taught how to use it. They undertook a lesson about roman numerals to become familiar with how the website operates.
In the past few years we have been using Mathletics as our online Maths program but his year we are trialing mathsonline.com.au.
This change has been prompted by the fact that mathsonline provides explanation videos for each lesson. A student and parent can watch these together and have the maths work, the student has to undertake, explained to them.
Ask your child to show you how the website works. If your child struggles to understand new concepts this is the program for them.
The benefit of undertaking online learning will only occur if students use it regularly and engage with the instructional video.
Even the best instructional videos are made more effective if a parent is present to discuss with the child the material being presented.

Our Second Video

Today Abby, Cody, Fraser, Mitchell and Kee worked on producing another movie during blastoff time.

The Movie was inspired by Mitchell bringing his skateboard to school.

Abby did a great job both filming and editing the movie. She used her lunch time to finish it off.

This movie has a coda at its end. A coda is a moral that the narrative teaches.

Homework this weekend is to read Chapter 3 of 'The Iron Man'.

We calculated that to read the whole book should take about an hour.
