Friday 27th March - Our First Video.

Friday 27th March

Today we produced our first video during Blast Off time. We hope you enjoy it. All students and teachers in this video are acting. None of us really act like this.

To improve as writers we have been discussing the three parts of a narrative:

• the orientation
• the complication and 
• the resolution. 

This video shows the three parts very clearly as Mia encounters a problem and then has to resolve it.

Friday Week 4

On Friday,

We did Roman numerals and other ancient numerals like the South American Mayan numerals. After Recess we did some maths then we went to Blast Off some people went off to the hall and played dodge ball and the rest went to the computer room and went on the computers.  

Mr Hansen read us an awesome book call “Iron Man”. Then we had to go to lunch.  We learnt to to describe verbs (action saying sensing relating), and noun groups - participants.  

We had to go to PE and we practiced our high jump we did the scissor kick. Next week we are going to learn the fosbury kick and we have to practise of high jump. We also got to use scooter boards and we had to partner up with one of our friends and played with them so we had to try not to run into other people and not cross the blue line. Friday was really busy.

Friday 20th Feb

A Note was given to the year 5 students asking if they want to be involved in Wakakirri. The group will meet on Wednesday nights after school from 3:30 starting in Week 9.
Today we did our spelling tests. We learned about how important it is to correctly pronounce our words and look at the letter patterns to work out the parts that trick us. We talked abut how to use mnemonics and gimmicks to remember difficult words.
We thought that we could remember the word nemesis by remembering the E stood for evil.
We started to read the book "The Iron Man." We talked about how to answer inferential questions.
In maths we did more about fractions and how to draw them correctly in our books so we could work out fraction problems more easily.

Thursday Week 4

Today we finished our spelling for the week and we all want to get 15/15 in the test tomorrow. Also we learnt how to say nouns in japanese and during our maths lesson, we learnt how to play a card game called Fullstop Five. You can play this game by yourself and it helps us practice how to quickly recall the rainbow facts (that’s and 2 numbers that add up to 10) In Science we discussed what people would use electrical energy for (e.g. microwaves, lights, kettles and fridges etc)

In the afternoon, we read an awesome book for fifteen minutes, and then we We did some work about latitude and longitude. We also talked about Mercator projection and Mollweide projection and the prime meridian which passes through Greenwich in England. We finished the day by working on our Zentangle hands. We will share some of these with you on our blog next week.

Information about Our Living Museum Project

LIVING MUSEUM

As part of our Well-being studies, after fitness on Wednesday 25^th Feb (week 5 at 9.30) Room 18 students will be setting up a display on their desk to show each other and invited teachers. This display is to consist of items which give us some information about your interests, hobbies, passions and past times. Parents may also attend any time between 10am and 11am.

Students need to plan what they will bring and how it will appear on the desk. Each item is to have a label which explains the significance of the object / picture etc. This may be either typed or neatly printed for others to read. The desk size is 60cm x 60cm. This will help plan out the area before bringing items to school. Think how items may need to be supported to stand them up.

Students are advised not to bring valuable items or things that might easily be broken. A picture or a drawing of the item may be used instead.

We will take a photo of each display to use during Literacy, Maths and Humanities lessons.

It's Week 4

It's week 4 already! Today we got some new high bounce small balls for our class and in our fitness lesson we worked in pairs and had to bounce the ball to each other and make up one rule. We then had to pair up with another group and also had to include their rule.
In our maths lesson today we looked at maths word problems. Only 2 students knew what the term "difference between" meant. We also got a pack of playing cards each and had to use them to help us with our times tables. Some people used the ipad to record themselves saying their tables. Everyone will have a turn before the end of the week.
During library time some students made sure that their Google Drive was working and others tried out their RAZ-kids reading online account. Others went to The Advertiser website and started reading the progressive novel which was started by Ruth Starke with classes around the state contributing chapters. We finished the day working in the area of Humanities - Civics and Citizenship. We wrote down lists of the different levels of decision making.

Great Week 3 Assembly

On Friday, eight students represented Rm18 at the school assembly as they presented humorous reports about which students would and wouldn't be acceptable as specimens in an alien zoo on Rigel VII. The audience enjoyed a video clip of the aliens from the Simpsons TV show discussing their plans to capture Ardtornish students for a new exhibition. All presenters spoke well and the audience liked our performance.

Abbey and Fraser won Principal Awards for organization. 

In maths we started work on fractions by revisiting basic concepts and undertaking  a range of problem solving tasks. 

During our blast off reward time everyone got to participate because we had worked so well over the week. 

Spelling - we had our first test. We tested each other in pairs. By marking our own work we improve our proofreading skills. We discussed ways of efficiently learning words. 

Monday - Week 3

Today we have had a great day. Our class has been learning about Roman numerals in maths. We have been to the library and to computer room 2. We also did a pre-test of some more spelling words. Almost all of us have finished our Personal Profile Information and Art Work now. We all talked to Mrs Warnock about setting Personal Learning Goals and wrote it down in our diary. We then chose 15 words to work on during the week for Spelling and wrote them into our diaries too. After lunch during our reading time, some of us went to the computer pod to start to use a program so that we could choose some books online. Next week we get to use these on iPads to do this.

In the afternoon we had to choose a Table Leader and discussed the different ways we could make that choice. That was part of our Civics and Citizenship lesson. We talked a bit about the Federal Government and voting too. Some groups voted and some nominated others. One group used Rock, Paper, Scissors! We then had to decide how we would select a 2 I C (Second In Charge). Some groups did that a different way. Each group now has the task of making a collaboration box. It’s a box where we can keep special extra stationery items the group will use.

Later on, when we were in the computer room Mrs. Warnock talked about keyboarding and how our pointer fingers could help us find the home keys quickly. We then tried to keep our fingers resting on the asdf and jkl; keys.

Thursday has been a busy day

Today we went to Japanese and finished off our covers and as soon as we  finished we watched a movie called The Big Race.

A while after that we did Science. We talked about energy and had to answer questions about energy. Once we finished the answer we had to put them in separate bags. Then table groups had to sort them out.

Today during our art time we did zentangles. That’s where you draw lots of lines and shapes with fine black pens. Some people have finished .

Some of the Year 5s had a look at the information about camp last night as it was on our Blog in the Camp Pages heading. We will be given notes to take home about it next week. We do NOT need to print them off the website. That’s just in case we loose the notes.  Year 5s camp this Term in Week 8 and is on the 16th,17th and 18th of March. They will be staying at Woodhouse.

The Year 6 camp is on in Term 2 on the 1st, 2nd and the 3rd of June. They went to a meeting about it in Mrs. Nellar’s room yesterday and will be doing some pre-camp activities with all the other Year 6s for the rest of the term on Wednesdays after our class music lesson.

We also have been finishing off a poster about numbers and Place Value. This is part of our Maths and Media Studies.

We are also just letting everyone  know that our long lesson in PE is on Fridays before lunch if you don’t  know already.

Wednesday's Work

Today we went to music. We did a grid of music in teams of three where we had to stomp clap and rest.

We are starting to get ready for sports day by doing long run with the Core Classes - Rooms 4,6,8,11 and ours - Room 18.

Today we had Mr Hansen for half an hour we did The processes- action,saying,sensing and relating we did actions for each one then we had a little competition to see who could do it the fastest.

This week we also started using our Spelling Workbooks and had to choose 15 of our own words. We need to check the meanings in a dictionary and check that we have copied them down correctly by using a spelling checker and a parent or other helper. Most of the class thought it was fun.

For this week’s homework some of us are choosing to make a poster on place value. Abby finished hers and showed it to the class. - Thanks Abby.

2015 work we have done so far

We have really enjoyed going to Payneham pool as an excursion with the Year 6/7's. We have also enjoyed receiving our work books and covering them.

We have started doing our narrative writing with the class. We had to see what we could remember about the structure of a narrative and then had 20 minutes to see how much we could get done in that time. Mrs. Warnock put a mark in our books to show how much we had written in that time.

We finished off today by having a fitness game which was organised by Mia and Katey.

Starting Small

It's Term 1 Week 2 and we've had a fantastic start to the year. This week it even gets better. We are going to begin to document some of the fantastic things we do in our class and share them with you on this blog.

Groups of students will begin by posting some of the highlights of our day. As we get better at this, we will add photos and links as the weeks go by. Students will be using first names only when posting and comments can be made on their posts. (these will have to be approved by the teachers first before they appear on the blog) We can't wait to get started tomorrow.
